A Long Family Tradition...

Just as the Civil war was starting, in1861, local cabinet maker Fred Long, with the help of Peter Kroehler opened a furniture store in downtown Naperville on the corner of Washington Street and Jackson Avenue where Beidelman Furniture stands today. During the mid-1800's modern embalming was invented. It was very common for furniture makers to buy into this new industry because, being wood workers, they also were hired to make coffins. In the 1880's Fred Long went to mortuary school, shortly followed his nephew and employee, Oliver Beidelman. In 1911 Oliver Beidelman took over the business. At this time the new Beidelman Furniture sold everything from housewares to Victrola "talking machine" record players. In 1928 Oliver, beside his son, Owen "Dutch" Beidelman built the building that exists today in the foot-print of the old store. During the time of construction, the old furniture store building was moved, contents and all, into the street near present day Jimmy's Bar and Grill. The furniture store operated in the temporary location and when the new building was completed they walked everything in the store over to the new building and tore down the old. The gothic revival architecture played nicely into the addition of a funeral chapel on the north side of the building. One can still see the outline of chapel windows and certain baroque fixtures. Beidelman Furniture continued to serve the community when Dutch took over the family business. In addition to operating both the furniture store and funeral home Dutch served on city council for 24 years and was a member of Rotary Club for over 60 years while also serving as a member of the Masonic Euclid Lodge #65 AF & FM, as well as past director and lifelong member of the Naperville YMCA. Dutch drove to work almost every day until he was 95 and died in 2000 at the age 97. Today Beidelman Furniture is owned and operated by Dutch's daughter and her husband John and Lana Heitmanek who keep the family tradition of honest service and hard work alive.
